PLAYING LEVELS DEFINED
In all areas of the country there are primarily 5 levels of adult volleyball competitiveness. They are B, BB, A, AA, and Open/Pro. These are classifications that are used by USA Volleyball, the United States’ governing body for adult non-professional volleyball.
B | A “B” player is in the early learning stages of the game and has only been playing for a short time. Typically, the players know how to bump, set, and spike, but are very inconsistent.
BB | A “BB” player is more consistent in basic skills and is learning to play a faster game. Players of this level still lack discipline in skills and is beginning to develop “Volleyball IQ”.
A | An “A” player is somewhere between “BB” and “AA”. They know all the skills well and are more consistent. They are more consistent and disciplined, but the speed is not as high as AA and their “Volleyball IQ” is still developing.
AA | An “AA” player is a very strong competitor with a high “Volleyball IQ”. Skills are well developed and stay consistent in all parts of the game. These players have usually been playing for years and have become smart players. This is a high level of competition and players competing in this division should be dynamic and make few errors.
Open / Pro | The “Open” players compete at the highest level in the region(s). These players are extremely consistent, disciplined, and very smart in their matches. This level makes very few errors, while playing at a high-speed game. The players at this level could possibly be Olympic player material. Typically, the matches between Open division teams are close in points, athletic plays being made, all players have strong athletic ability, and there is a high competition level throughout the entire match.
