If you’ve ever watched a national volleyball tournament, you’ve likely seen a USAV Junior National Official—though you may not have realized it. These officials are certified to referee the highest-level junior volleyball events in the country. They’re experienced, professional, and trusted to manage fast-paced, high-stakes matches.
“It’s not just a patch;
Naomi buckwalter
it’s a testament to personal growth,
both as an official and as
an individual.”
So what exactly is this certification?
A USAV Junior National Official is someone who has proven their ability to consistently apply USA Volleyball rules at a national standard. They communicate clearly with players and coaches, manage match flow confidently, and uphold the integrity of the game. It’s a respected title earned through hard work, training, and formal evaluation.
The process starts at the local level. New officials begin by working at tournaments in their region, learning the mechanics of officiating and gaining hands-on experience. As they improve, they can pursue regional certification—an essential step before advancing nationally.
Once a Regional Official has developed a strong reputation, they may be nominated to attend a Junior National rating event. These events, often held at USA Volleyball’s national championships, are where candidates are evaluated on the stand during live matches. They also participate in feedback sessions with experienced officials.
If they meet the national criteria, candidates will earn the Junior National designation. This opens doors to officiating prestigious national events and often leads to mentorship roles and further advancement. It’s not just a badge—it’s a mark of excellence in the officiating world.
