For Trish Hoover, earning her USA Volleyball National officiating patch is more than just a milestone—it’s the realization of a goal she set at the very beginning of her officiating journey. The path has been both challenging and rewarding, pushing her to grow in ways she never expected.
Along the way, she has traveled the country working with coaches, players, and officials at every level—from 10-year-olds to NCAA Division I men. Each match has been a chance to learn the value of humility, feedback, and the power of a simple “thank you.” These experiences have strengthened her confidence, composure under pressure, and her “never quit” attitude—qualities that have shaped not only her officiating career but also her personal life. Her next goal: achieving her PAVO National certification, the highest level of NCAA volleyball officiating.
A Lifelong Love for Volleyball

Volleyball has always been central to Trish’s life. She played grass doubles and indoor, and coached both girls’ and boys’ high school and club teams for more than 20 years. Becoming a referee, however, wasn’t something she originally envisioned. “Thankfully, a good friend pushed me to explore officiating. After years of saying no, I finally realized I was ready for a new challenge—and getting paid to watch volleyball was pretty cool!”
Rewards of the Role
The most rewarding part of officiating for Trish is the constant challenge of learning and improving. Deepening her knowledge of the game, traveling, and building lifelong friendships have made the journey fulfilling.
Staying Calm Under Pressure
When matches heat up, Trish relies on positive self-talk and controlled breathing. Her mantra—“strong and confident”—guides her through tense moments. She follows a routine of slow, deep breaths to stay focused and resets quickly with a “next play” mentality when things don’t go as planned.
Challenges on the Court
Managing the intensity of the game is one of the greatest challenges officials face. Coaches, players, and fans bring passion and strong opinions, and working with new partners requires quick trust and communication. Mental fatigue is another hurdle, especially during marathon matches that stretch to extra points in a fifth set. To stay sharp, Trish prioritizes fitness, sleep, hydration, and healthy habits throughout the season.
Advice for Aspiring Officials
Trish encourages anyone considering officiating to dive in with an open mind. “Have fun, smile, and enjoy the ride!” she says. “It’s a flexible role—you can treat it as a side hustle or pursue it as a career. You’ll start with younger athletes and work your way up if you choose.”
As the recruitment coordinator for the Keystone Region, which covers all of Pennsylvania, Trish is eager to welcome new officials. Those interested can reach her at KRVAofficiating@gmail.com.
