Athlete’s Bill of Rights

Printable Version

The purpose of this document is to assist athletes and their parents/guardians during the junior club tryout and selection process. It is the club’s responsibility is to provide athletes and their families with complete information about its program. Athletes and their families are responsible for educating themselves about the programs they are considering. Both parties are expected to honor any commitments they make throughout the process.

Types of Tryouts

There are several types of tryouts. Before attending, athletes and families should understand the format being offered:

  • Are you trying out for a club or a specific team within the club?
  • Are tryouts open to all athletes?
  • Are tryouts limited to the number of available roster positions?
  • Is the tryout by invitation only?

Understanding the type of tryout being conducted is an important part of the selection process.

Open Gyms and Clinics

Open gym sessions and instructional clinics are NOT considered part of the official tryout process. The Keystone Region Volleyball Association (KRVA) does not sanction these events.

Only tryouts listed on the KRVA website are approved and sanctioned by the Keystone Region. Clubs that do not sanction their tryouts through the KRVA are responsible for providing their own insurance coverage. Athletes attending unsanctioned tryouts are NOT covered by USA Volleyball’s secondary medical insurance.

Loyalty Offers and Tryout Offers

Loyalty offers for returning athletes may be made following the conclusion of the Girls Junior National Championship (GJNC) and prior to summer tryouts. Clubs are responsible for submitting their loyalty offers to the Keystone Region, and those offers are published on the KRVA website.

Summer and fall tryouts may begin on the dates established and posted by the KRVA. Clubs may contact the parents/guardians of junior players from other clubs only after the athlete’s current USA Volleyball season has concluded.

If a player has already accepted an offer from a club, they are no longer eligible to attend tryouts for another club.

All offers remain valid for 48 hours unless otherwise specified.

Acceptance of an Offer

The KRVA considers a loyalty offer or tryout offer to be accepted and binding when a parent or guardian responds to the offer via email and that acceptance is received by the club and the region office. The offer is between the player, the club and the parent. Please read thoroughly and understand the offer and commitment you are making on behalf of your child to the club.

The KRVA does not recognize verbal agreements or text messages as official offers or acceptances.

Once an offer has been accepted, the athlete may not attend another club’s tryouts, as the athlete is now committed to the club for the upcoming season.

Release from a Binding Agreement

An athlete may be released from a binding agreement only if the club director provides written notification to the KRVA office confirming the athlete’s release.

Clubs are not required to release an athlete from a binding agreement once it has been completed and received. In some cases, a club may impose a financial penalty as a condition of release.

Additionally, participation in a sanctioned USA Volleyball event restricts an athlete from representing another club for the remainder of that season.

Good Luck

We hope this information is helpful as you navigate the club tryout and selection process. Remember, choosing a club is an important decision, and it is your responsibility to fully understand the program you are considering. Take the time to ask questions, review the club’s expectations, and evaluate whether the program is the right fit for your child and family.
