Volleyball is more than just a sport; for many, it’s a passion that transcends the court and touches every part of life. For some, like the KRVA’s Officials Advisor, Glenn Reid, it’s a lifelong journey. We sat down to learn more about his story, his role at KRVA, and the lessons volleyball has taught him over the years.

How did you first get involved with volleyball?
“I played in college and then in the Air Force,” he explains. “A lot of beach volleyball in California.” It’s clear that volleyball wasn’t just a hobby; it was a way of life. From the fast-paced courts of college to the sunny beaches of California, the sport took Glenn to different places, shaping both his game and his perspective on life.
What is one lesson from volleyball that’s helped you in your everyday life?
“Touch/No-Touch – In/Way In,” he responds, recalling an old volleyball cheer. “It taught me not to touch things that are out-of-bounds!” The simple yet powerful lesson has stuck with him: knowing what to avoid and respecting boundaries, both on and off the court.
What is your role at Keystone Region Volleyball Association, and how long have you been involved?
As the Officials Advisor, Glenn plays a crucial role in the training and development of referees and officials. “Since 1776,” he jokes, highlighting the long tenure he’s had with the Region. His deep experience and commitment to improving the standards of officiating in the region speak volumes about his dedication to the game.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Keystone Region?
“The camaraderie and friendly people,” he says, adding with a grin, “except for Neal!” It’s clear that relationships and community are at the heart of his involvement with KRVA. The sense of belonging and the fun banter are some of the standout elements that make the Keystone Region special to him.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to athletes, parents, and coaches in the region?
“Enjoy the ability to participate in this great game and just have fun,” he says, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the experience. Whether you’re playing, coaching, or supporting, it’s about enjoying the moment and appreciating the opportunities volleyball provides.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen happen on the court?
“One time, after complaining about a call/no-call, a coach went back to sit on his bench and fell backwards over it. He agreed never to complain again!” The mishap was a humorous reminder of how unpredictable and often comedic the volleyball court can be.
If you could trade places with any volleyball player for a day, who would it be?
“If I was 21, I’d be Sinjin Smith on the beach,” he says, nodding to one of volleyball’s all-time greats. Sinjin Smith’s legendary career on the beach volleyball circuit has earned him a place among the sport’s icons, and it’s no surprise that he’d be the one to take the spotlight if given the chance.
If KRVA gave out “superlatives,” what would yours be?
“Most Laid-Back Referee,” he chuckles. It’s a fitting title for someone who enjoys the sport and its community while maintaining a calm and composed demeanor—even when the intensity of a match rises.

Which emoji best describes you during a tournament weekend?
“The emoji where the head explodes!!!” He laughs, joking about the chaos and excitement that comes with tournament weekends. Between the buzzer-beaters, the calls, and the non-stop action, it’s no wonder that emoji fits the bill!
Just for Fun
Favorite pump-up song: Old Black Betty
Coffee, tea, or energy drink: Arnold Palmer (the perfect balance of sweet and refreshing!)
Hidden talent: “The ability to shake a martini while captaining a boat.” A skill that certainly sounds impressive, though we can only imagine how much fun it must be to see in action.
Final Thoughts
The love of volleyball is clearly woven into every aspect of his life, from his early years of playing in college and the Air Force to his current role helping to shape the next generation of referees. Through his experience and involvement with the Keystone Region Volleyball Association, he continues to inspire others to enjoy the sport and, most importantly, have fun while doing so.
Whether it’s the advice, the laughs, or the passion for the game, Glenn’s story is a reminder that volleyball isn’t just about playing; it’s about community, growth, and lifelong enjoyment
