Shawn has been around the sport of volleyball nearly his entire life, and officiating for the past 34 years.
KRVA: How did you first become involved with the sport of volleyball?
Shawn: I first came in contact with the game of volleyball at age 7. My dad was a girls’ volleyball coach and I can Denver tagging along to practices with him. I began playing the game competitively in 1987.
KRVA: When did you begin officiating?
Shawn: After graduating high school in 1990, I took my test to become a high school official. In 1995 I became a USAV official.
KRVA: How many tournaments do you typically work during volleyball season?
Shawn: I work at least three weekend tournaments per month during a volleyball season.
KRVA: What has been the most rewarding aspect of officiating?
Shawn: I love being around the game, whether it’s officiating, coaching or playing. Officiating has allowed me to give back to the game I love.
KRVA: What advice can you offer someone interested in becoming an official?
Shawn: Get involved as much as you can. Watch the game, learn from others, and just work hard to become the best official you can be.
KRVA: What do you do for your day job?
Shawn: Health and Physical Education Teacher
KRVA: Married? Kids? Pets?
Shawn: I have married for 23 years, have 3 kid (1 boy and 2 girls). I have 2 dogs and 2 cats.
KRVA: What do you do in your spare time? Hobbies?
Shawn: Golfing, hunting and fishing is what I like to do in spare time.
KRVA: Last book you read?
Shawn: I’m not much of a reader but the last book I read was “The Old Man and The Sea”
KRVA: Favorite movie.
Shawn: Star Wars because it was the first movie I saw in the movie theater as a kid.
KRVA: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Shawn: I definitely want to go to Montana to fish the streams, so that’s on my bucket list.
